Millions of Americans have difficulty maintaining stable blood sugar levels that are already within the normal range. The herb Gymnema is traditionally known as "gurmar" (the sugar destroyer). For at least the past 1500 years, Ayurvedic physicians have used a combination of diet and Gymnema leaf to help support normal blood sugar levels. Helps to maintain blood sugar levels that are already within the normal range and supports healthy function of the Pancreas and may even REGENERATE the pancreas. Research has shown that Gymnema (Gymnema sylvestre) has a beneficial effect on Beta cells in the pancreas and delays glucose absorption in the intestine. This activity helps protect the pancreas from releasing too much insulin.

TRY THIS EXPERIMENT! YOU WILL BE SHOCKED!

Take a capsule or two of Dr. K's Gymnema Sylvestris (Sylvestre). Open the capsules and mix with about a quarter of a cup of water. Mix well and then swish it around in your mouth without swallowing for about a minute. Then swallow it. Now put anything (and I mean ANYTHING) into your mouth CONTAINING SUGAR. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TASTE THE SUGAR! YOU WILL BE ABLE TO TASTE ALL THE OTHER INGREDIENTS, BUT NOT THE SUGAR. If you are able to taste the sugar, you are either doing it wrong or there is something terribly wrong with you. The Gymnema has blocked you from tasting the sugar....how about that!!!?? Just think, if it can do this only swishing it around in my mouth, then what is it doing in my body? Acknowledged as Safe with no known side-effects. Try it if you have diabetes or want to lose weight (with a good weight-loss program), but be sure to check with your doctor or health professional first.

I've used Gymnema Sylvestre (or Sylvestris, if you prefer) for decades in my clinics with excellent results. It is a wonderful supplement to use as part of my weight loss program or any weight-loss
program for that matter. It is, in my opinion, one of the top contenders to use as a supplement in type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Many studies indicate that it lowers blood sugar and hence the need for insulin, so that insulin levels can be reduced. Many studies show that the actual beta cells in the pancreas were REGENERATED in rats, but there is compelling evidence in studying the effect of Gymnema in humans as well. It is adjudged as being safe and as previously stated, has been used for hundreds if not thousands of years.

The Gymnema plant is used in India and parts of Asia as a natural treatment for diabetes or “sweet urine.” The herb’s active ingredient, gymnemic acid, is extracted from leaves and roots, and helps to lower and balance blood sugar levels. The unique shape of gymnemic acid molecules are similar to that of glucose, allowing it to fill cell receptors in the lining the intestines, thereby preventing uptake of sugar molecules.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) find “good scientific evidence” that gymnema sylvestre can be helpful in controlling blood sugar levels in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes when used in conjunction with insulin and other medications as prescribed by a doctor. It is important that people with existing blood sugar issues talk to their doctors before adding gymnema sylvestre to their diet, as insulin or other medications may need to be reduced.
In healthy adults gymnema sylvestre is believed to help curb cravings for sweets. Though not a magic bullet, when taken with a high-carbohydrate meal or a meal high in sugar, it can aid the body by passing through sugars and making carbs available for burning, rather than turning these into fat stores. In this way it helps to build lean muscle mass.

Supporters of gymnema sylvestre claim the herb also lowers triglycerides and “bad cholesterol.” The NLM and NIH acknowledge that preliminary human studies with patients having type 2 diabetes tend to back this claim, but believe stronger research is required before a determination can be positively made.

Some versions of Gymnema consist of "standardized" extracts, meaning they try to concentrate the active ingredients of the Gymnema to make sure it contains sufficient quantitites of gymnemic acid. This is an effort to make sure no matter what source you get the gymnema from, it is powerful. However, many herbalists do not believe in this practice as this is tantamount to making it more like a drug. Drug companies CONCENTRATE the active ingredients of valuable herbal plants to be used as prescription therapy. This makes the product much more powerful, but also increases the amount of SIDE-EFFECTS. Many herbalist, thus, who are purists, would rather have you take more of gymnema that is lower in gymnemic acid than to have you take concentrated extracts. Remember, when Nature is the MASTER PHARMACIST there are less chances or even no chance of mistake. When man is involved in concentrating and manufacturing there is more room for error. Dr. K says, "YOU CANNOT OUT-THINK THE MASTER PHARMACIST WHICH YOU MAY CALL NATURE...OR GOD."

Along with a healthy diet and exercise, gymnema sylvestre can be a helpful addition to your weight-loss plan. Note that it builds up in the system over a few weeks time becoming more effective. Since it is recommended that gymnema sylvestre be taken with each meal, the dosage is dependent on whether it is the pure herb or the standardized extract. Besides purchasing it as a stand-alone it is also commonly taken in conjunction with Hoodia Gordonii (if you can get the real stuff--see Hoodia Gordonii on this website), or with vanadium or cinnamon, or their extracts.

Gymnema sylvestre has been deemed very safe for adults at suggested doses. If pregnant or lactating, do not take this herb due to lack of research and potential impact on the baby. Those will allergies to the milkweed family might experience allergic reactions to gymnema sylvestre. As always, check with your doctor before beginning a new health routine, particularly if you are diabetic or prone to issues involving blood sugar.

Gymnema sylvestre grows in South-east Asia. Its therapeutic role in relation to diabetes mellitus, rheumatic arthritis and gout have been well known for a long time. Extracts of this plant are widely used in Australian, Japanese, Vietnamese and Indian folk medicine. However, gymnema is best known for its benefits in diabetes. Gymnema helps support healthy blood sugar levels. Gymnema sylvestre contains compounds known as gymnemic acids and tritepenoid saponins, gymnemasins A, B, C and D.

Gymnema sylvestre leaves have antibacterial compounds. Anti-allergic, antiviral, lipid lowering and other effects are also reported. Rodent studies indicate that gymnema may have the capacity to maintain healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels. If you would like to eat less and have better blood cholesterol and blood sugar control, consider Diet Rx appetite suppressant. See below for details.

What's in Gymnema Sylvestre?
Gymnema contains a number of saponins, and flavonoid compounds including kaempferol and quercetin.

Gymnema Safety
A one year study on rodents given gymnema did not show any toxicity. In clinical research studies, Gymnema is usually standardized to 25% gymnemic acids (as in Gymnema Leaf Extract 25% - 260 mg (Yielding 65 mg Gymnemic Acids). Gymnema has been used traditionally in India for centuries and has been shown in research to support healthy glucose metabolism by mediation of insulin release and activity and enhancement of healthy pancreatic function.
